South African Mint

The South African Mint is responsible for minting all coins of the South African rand on behalf of its owner: the South African Reserve Bank. Located in Centurion, near South Africa's capital Pretoria, this mint produces coins for both domestic and international markets.

History South African Mint

Following the discovery of gold in the South African Republic - which triggered the Witwatersrand Gold Rush in 1886 - the country's president Paul Kruger decided to establish a national mint. It was established in 1890 and opened on 6 July 1892 in Pretoria. After the end of the Second Boer War in 1902, the country was incorporated into the British Empire and became the Transvaal Colony. This led to the closure of the mint after sterling became the legal tender of the new colony. Under the Mint Act of 1919, the British established a division of the Royal Mint on 1 January 1923, which produced 83,114,575 pounds of sovereign during its lifetime. As South Africa began to sever ties with Britain, the mint closed on 30 June 1941 and was later reopened as the South African Mint.

The silver Krugerrand is issued in 99.99% pure silver. This makes the weight and content of this Krugerrand equal to other common silver investment coins. Due to the large circulation in which the South African Mint has issued these new silver coins, the premium is also similar to other common investment coins, making this an interesting option for the investor in physical silver.
